EGGA is a voluntary union of the people
wishing to improve the life and health of the elderly. The association was created in 1997
by seven interested people. The number of the members of EGGA was 142 by mid 2002. The
members include medical doctors, nurses, nurses' aids, social workers, social helpers and
other people working with the elderly. The events of EGGA are open for the public,
including the elderly themselves and their family members. The main goal of EGGA is to
update the knowledge of the people working with the elderly and of the whole society about
normal aging, possibilities of improving the life quality of the elderly needing help and
helping family members of the elderly. One form of EGGA's activity is arranging regular
informational days - four times a year. EGGA offers supplementary training in geriatrics
and gerontology to medical doctors, nurses, social workers, volunteers and family members
of the elderly. Several publications about aging, recreational treatment and social care
of the elderly in Estonia (1999 and 2001), different problems of the older persons (books
and videotapes) have been produced. Members of the EGGA participate actively in the
development of politics for the elderly and geriatric and nursing care in Estonia. Two
major surveys have been arranged (Study of health and
coping of older population of
Estonia in 2000 and Survey of seniors in Tartu 2002) and a monograph has been published
(Health and social care of the elderly in Estonia, 2001). |
